Elke Pahl-Weber (* 1952 in Hamburg ) is a German architect , urban planner and university lecturer. She is professor for the development of existing buildings and the renewal of settlement units at the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning at the TU Berlin . Her main topics include megacities , energy-efficient urban structures and integrated and sustainable urban development . She also researches and advises municipalities on the topic of smart cities .

Career

Pahl-Weber was born in Hamburg in 1952. After graduating from high school, she studied architecture at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts from 1971 , where she graduated in 1977 with a degree in engineering.

As a research assistant and lecturer, she stayed at her university in the field of analysis of the built environment before moving to the Technical University of Hamburg as a research assistant in 1983 , where she did research on urban planning and the history of urban construction .

In 1989, together with Sabine Baumgart, she founded BPW Baumgart Pahl-Weber in Hamburg, which she managed as sole owner from 2001 to 2009. Here she supervised various projects in the field of urban development and received several awards, including in 2006 within the framework of the German Urban Development Award for her participation in the overall urban development concept of the Messestadt Riem .

In addition to his freelance work, Pahl-Weber took on visiting professorships between 1998 and 2000 in the fields of architecture and urban planning at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the Kassel University .

In 2004 she was appointed professor at the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning at the TU Berlin. While retaining her professorship, she headed the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research at the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning from June 2009 to September 2011 . This had only recently emerged from the merger of several research institutes. Here she coordinated the research work of the Federal in the fields of construction and the city - and space research and advised the federal government in urban and regional development as well as in housing, real estate and construction.

In addition to projects in Germany, for example in Wolfsburg or Tegel on smart cities, she led research support in the area of ​​megacities in Morocco , Ethiopia , South Africa , China , India and Vietnam . In Iran, she was responsible for the megacities project in Haschtgerd New Town as part of the Young Cities cooperation project .

Pahl-Weber is also researching the further development of the design thinking method known from product development and transferring it to questions of urban planning, known as urban design thinking.

Pahl-Weber was and is a member and board member of numerous specialist commissions and associations, including deputy chairwoman of the BMI's historians' commission in the field of planning and building work from 1933 to 1945.

She is married and has two kids.
