Haschtgerd New Town ( Persian شهر جدید هشتگرد, DMG Šahr-i Ǧadīd-i Haštgerd ) is the largest planned city (New Town) in Iran in the Alborz province . It is located in the south of the old Haschtgerd , approx. 30 km west of the metropolis Karaj and approx. 60 km west of the megacity Tehran . Haschtgerd New Town was founded in 1993 by the Iranian state planning authority, had around 40,000 residents in 2000 and is expected to accommodate 500,000 residents by 2016.

Young Cities - New Towns project

The megacity of Tehran, with its 14 million inhabitants now, is becoming increasingly unmanageable. The social and ecological problems are getting bigger and bigger. Even surrounding sub-centers such as the world's largest dormitory city, Karaj , can no longer keep up with the drastic increase in population. Funded by the Iranian and German governments, scientists from the Research Center for Building and Housing of Iran and the Technical University of Berlin (co-responsible: Elke Pahl-Weber ) have been developing the Haschgerd New Town since 2005. The goals in the planning were the adaptation and testing of innovative technologies in construction, earthquake safety and improvement of the building quality in New Towns in general and the development of sustainable urban planning solutions and two urban planning scenarios for the development of a pilot project.
