The Regionale 2006 was a joint work program of the three Bergisch cities of Remscheid , Solingen and Wuppertal with the aim of promoting regional structural change by 2006. Like the previous Regionale in 2004, it was funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The aim of the three large cities of the Bergisch city triangle was to promote structural change in the region at the beginning of the new millennium. Regional strengths and peculiarities should be better worked out, weaknesses corrected. The regional 2006 process was organized by a large network of experts from politics, administration, science and institutions in the region.

Most of the implemented projects were usable in 2006, but there were also more. In a performance show, the Bergische Expo , the region then presented itself in the same year as an economic area and an interesting city region for tourists . The structural change for the Bergisch city triangle was not completed with the Regionale 2006 and was pushed further afterwards.

The regional topics and projects

Route of the Wuppertal suspension railway
Müngsten Bridge Park
The point at which the Müngsten Bridge spans the Wupper valley is in the center of the Bergisch city triangle. Germany’s highest railway bridge at 107 meters, which is still in use today, stands for the once prospering industry, for excellent engineering achievements and for conquering mountain and valley landscapes. Large-scale redesigns and creative ideas, especially to promote tourism, were implemented there and the location made more attractive, the bridge park was created. Examples include an observation deck, a lawn and a transporter bridge over the river bed.
The "Bergische Ring"
There is a large concentration of unusual means of transport in the region: trolleybuses , the Wuppertal suspension railway , historic trams , vintage buses and old rail buses . These modes of transport have been combined in an interesting tour for tourists.
Competence to the power of 3 - future for the region’s talents
This is the title of a series of so-called competence centers that were installed in each of the three cities as transfer points for business and universities. Since then, further training courses and presentations have taken place there. In Solingen, for example, such a competence center for product design was established for the cutlery industry, among other things.
Lively corporate culture - The Bergisch companies in structural change
That was the title of an initiative that mobilized the commitment of companies in the region towards the future. Structural change should not be an exclusively public matter. In this way, entrepreneurial projects have been and are supported that also bring added value for the city and region: when cooperations are entered into within the Bergisch city triangle, when the name of the region is carried around the world through high-quality products or when cultural and social commitment is associated with it .
Experience industrial culture - on the trail of industrial history
This initiative worked to make the industrial culture of the region better usable for tourism

The main development areas in the cities

Reception building of the former Solingen main station , now the Forum product design used

In addition to the joint projects, each city also worked on a key urban development project for itself . This should also make the structural change visible on site:

In Solingen , the southern inner city with the many railway and industrial wastelands and the old main train station was to be developed into a liveable district. The motto was “ Living and working close to the city with lots of green ”. The focus was on the old train station, which had a completely new function: The so-called Product Design Forum was created there - a forum for Solingen companies, with an affiliated institute of the Bergische Universität , with exhibition areas and as a contact point for further training and cooperation. In addition, the old goods halls were converted into artists' studios, with the Plagiarius Museum in the front building, which aims to draw attention to industrial plagiarism of all kinds. The old railway area was redesigned to become the Südpark park and the Solingen music school was housed in an industrial area adjacent to the station area .

Remscheid also focused on the development of the city around the train station. The derelict railway areas were also developed into a lively district with offices and leisure facilities. A competence center dealing with the topic of metal processing was also part of Remscheid's development tasks. A shop window for the Remscheid economy was also integratedat the new main train station.

With its development work, Wuppertal concentrated on the urban valley area along the Wupper : This was where the investmentfocus was on Döppersberg , the Barmen cultural axis and the Wuppertal Zoo . The coexistence of living, working and culture was promoted and received quality impulses through a free space program. Many service providers in the media and event sector are located in the middle of Wuppertal. In these areas, collaborations were promoted and spaces made available in which they could expand.
