Südpark (Solingen)

South park

The Südpark is the central park in the southern inner city of the Bergisch city of Solingen . It is located around the old main train station and was given its current design as part of the Regionale 2006 . The corkscrew route begins in the south park, which connects the park with the Gräfrath district in the north as a cycle path with a length of around 15 kilometers . The cultural center of the Südpark are the former goods halls converted into artist studios and the Plagiarius Museum , which presents all kinds of counterfeit products .

The Südpark was awarded the North Rhine-Westphalia Landscape Architecture Prize in April 2008.

location

The Südpark extends from the Luther Church , the twin factory and the Grünewald stop in the west to the new Mitte train station in the east. In the north it is bounded by the federal highway 229 , in the south the railway tracks of the Wuppertal-Oberbarmen-Solingen line form the border of the south park and the districts of Mitte and Höhscheid .

history

The history of the Südpark is inextricably linked with that of the old main train station. The extensive area around the station, which opened as Solingen Süd station in 1890, was used for logistical purposes from the start. Industrial companies that benefited from the proximity to the railways had settled almost around the station. The goods halls were created as a storage area for the transported freight. It was not until 1913 that the station was named Hauptbahnhof .

After the shutdown of passenger traffic on the corkscrew railway to Wuppertal - Vohwinkel , the station gradually lost its importance, which is also due to its remote location between the district centers. As a result of de-industrialization, the number of industrial companies in the vicinity of the train station decreased and with it the freight transported in freight traffic . In 1995 the corkscrew railway between Solingen-Wald and the main train station was finally closed. In addition to the goods halls, which remained unused, the main building of the station also fell into disrepair over time.

At the beginning of the 2000s, the Regionale 2006 was planned as a joint project between the cities of Wuppertal, Remscheid and Solingen. The most important project implemented in Solingen was to renovate the southern inner city, with the redesign of the areas around the old main train station. For this purpose the redevelopment company Südliche Innenstadt was founded by the city of Solingen. The station building, which had degenerated into an eyesore, was restored and redesigned along with the passenger bridge. Today, the product design forum and a restaurant are located there. The goods halls were completely refurbished and converted into artist studios and apartments. The open spaces were greened and supplemented with seating. A football field and a half pipe were built in the east. On April 1, 2007, the Plagiarius Museum opened in the head building of the restored goods halls. In the period that followed, new buildings were also built around the old goods halls, for example on Alexander-Coppel-Straße, where, among other things, an outpatient clinic is located. In 2013 the interest group Wir was founded in the Südpark Solingen , which has set itself the goal of strengthening the location through joint projects.

Forum product design

The restored station reception building, which was largely destroyed in the Second World War and therefore only consists of a small old building and a waiting hall from the 1950s, functions as a product design forum. It includes the Institute for Product Innovations at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , the Chair for New Manufacturing Technologies and Materials at the Bergische Universität as well as a cutting goods office. The aim of the Product Design Forum, founded in 2006, is to create a place where the Solingen brand can be experienced as a guarantee of quality for high-quality cutlery. The old waiting hall also serves as an event location.

Goods halls

The recently completely run-down warehouses on what was previously known as Lagerstraße, between the Birkenweiher and Brühler Straße, now form attractive living space and studios for a number of artists after their complete renovation. In the free-standing building at one end there is a restaurant. In March 2007 the Artothek and the SK Gallery moved from the Art Museum Solingen in the former town hall of Gräfrath to larger, lighter rooms in the goods halls.

Plagiarius Museum

The Plagiarius Museum is located in the head building of the goods halls. As the only museum against product counterfeiting, it shows several hundred consumer products such as handkerchiefs or perfumes and their counterfeit products .

Ice rink

After various disputes in local politics, the ice rink was put into operation on December 15, 1979 on Birker Strasse . The hall has been sponsored by Solinger Lebenshilfe for several years . In the winter months from September to April, the multifunctional hall is used as an ice rink. The 10,000 square meter hall is used by various organizers over the summer, for example the Solingen trade fair takes place there.

Play opportunities and urban gardening

When designing the green areas in the west, the four themed gardens islands , forest , village and sand / stones were created as playgrounds for children and young people between Kölner Straße and the former station forecourt . In the east, south of the ice rink, a ball playground and a runway were created as play areas. In 2013 the Solingen urban gardening initiative Scharfe Gärten created a publicly accessible garden on an area provided by the city south of the goods halls. Neighboring artists helped design the garden. Also hives were set up.

Business settlement

The redevelopment company Südliche Innenstadt Solingen GmbH & Co. KG also marketed the commercial space in the Südpark before it ceased its operational work in mid-2011. After the sale of the old customs office to a private investor, the first residential and office building was rebuilt in 2008 between the old goods halls and the railroad tracks. Another new office building followed right next to it in 2010. In the same year, a workshop for mentally disabled people was opened in a new building by Lebenshilfe Solingen on Alexander-Coppel-Straße. In September 2012, a newly built private clinic opened right next to it. In 2015, the construction of a new bicycle dealer at the gate to the Südpark on Bundesstraße 229 began and was completed in 2016.
