The goods shed , also known as a goods hall , goods floor or, in Austria, a freight magazine or goods magazine , is used for the temporary storage of piece goods when they pass between the road and the railroad or one of the two and the ship. Bulky goods , on the other hand, are handled in specially built facilities or on the loading line .

Structure and use

Small goods sheds are mostly located on the side of the station building , while larger goods sheds are mostly stand- alone buildings. Often a loading ramp is also attached to the goods shed. The goods shed is accessed by a track on one side and a street on the other, and there are seldom tracks leading directly into the interior of the building. To facilitate handling , the floor of the goods shed is level with the floor of the road vehicles or railroad cars.

The goods shed used to house the goods expedition, here everyone could drop off and pick up their goods; goods that were too heavy to be transported by post were posted here. They were correspondingly important for the local economy before the advent of trucks, as they actually got the flow of goods going. However, mostly only general cargo was accepted, also because the goods usually had to be reloaded several times en route. But this type of handling was labor-intensive; the necessary rationalization after the Second World War led, among other things, to the introduction of the Euro pallet in 1961 . This made the transshipment easier, but the repeated reloading during the transport remained.

As a result of the reorganization and relocation of general cargo traffic to the road, almost all goods sheds have become superfluous. Occasionally, the goods sheds were taken over by companies and used as a siding . However, this re-use has also become rare due to the cancellation of the service at a number of train stations, since the freight volume is usually viewed as too small by such customers. Most of the goods sheds have been demolished, are being used for various other purposes, or are empty.
