Friedemann Kupsa

Friedemann Kupsa (born September 7, 1943 in St. Pölten , Austria ) is an Austrian cellist .

Friedemann Kupsa studied at the University of Music Vienna and attended master classes with Daniil Schafran , as well as chamber music courses with the La Salle Quartet . The musician has been a member of the Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet since 1986 . With this ensemble he received international recognition through numerous chamber music first recordings by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel , Ethel Smyth , Germaine Tailleferre and Grażyna Bacewicz .

The cellist recorded the great piano chamber music by Max Reger together with the pianist Wolfram Lorenzen (piano quintet op.64, piano trio op.102, piano quartets opp. 113 and 133) as well as the first 8 string quartets by Darius Milhaud and the two great string quartets by Arthur Bliss . Together with the pianist Anna Silova he recorded Ethel Smyth's two cello sonatas as a world premiere. He also made a name for himself with the CD recording of Nadia Boulanger's cello works. In addition, together with the pianist Celine Dutilly, he published the recordings of the two works for cello and piano by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel , the world premiere of “Sonata o Fantasia” and “Capriccio”.

Friedemann Kupsa was able to show his commitment to the music of the 20th century with the world premiere recordings of the duo sonatas by the Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas and the Romanian composer Anatol Vieru . Together with the duo sonatas by Maurice Ravel , Zoltán Kodály , Arthur Honegger , Darius Milhaud and the variations by Elizabeth Maconchy . he recorded the world premiere of the duo composition "Strassenmusik n ° 16" op. 210 by Dimitri Nicolau , which is dedicated to the two soloists Renate Eggebrecht , violin and Friedemann Kupsa, cello.

The musician played with his ensemble in numerous concerts such as u. a. at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Toblacher Gustav Mahler Festival, Chard Women's Music Festival, Lucca Music Festival, Munich Women's Music Festival and the Moravia Festival accompanied by radio and TV recordings.

In 1991, together with his wife Renate Eggebrecht, he founded the CD label Troubadisc , which publishes classical music beyond the usual repertoire.
