Grażyna Bacewicz (born February 5, 1909 in Łódź , † January 17, 1969 in Warsaw ) was a Polish composer . The Łódź Music Academy bears her name in honor of her and her brother Kiejstut Bacewicz . She was the sister of the poet and journalist Wanda Bacewicz .

Life

Bacewicz received her first training in piano, violin and composition from her father, Vincas Bacevičius, of Lithuanian origin . She performed as a child and composed her first work at the age of thirteen. In 1928 she began studying philosophy at the University of Warsaw . At the Warsaw Music Academy she studied composition with Kazimierz Sikorski , violin with Józef Jarzębski and piano with Józef Turczyński . Since the early 1930s she studied composition with Nadia Boulanger and violin with André Touret and Carl Flesch in Paris . From 1934 to 1935 and after 1945 she taught at the Conservatory in Łódź, after which she lived in Warsaw. In 1935 she took part in the International Wieniawski Competition in Warsaw, from 1936 to 1938 she was concertmaster in the orchestra of the Polish Radio . Before the Second World War she gave concerts all over Europe, often accompanied by her brother Kiejstut on the piano. From 1953 she devoted herself entirely to composition and teaching; since 1963 she did this at the Warsaw Conservatory. She was also successful as a writer, and several of her stories and novels were published in Poland. Piotr Moss was one of her students . She was a juror in many international violin competitions. Another brother of hers was the Lithuanian composer Vytautas Bacevičius .

Bacewicz composed a funk opera ( Przygoda Króla Artura , 1959), three ballets, six symphonies and other orchestral works, several instrumental concerts, numerous chamber music works, a cantata and songs. She was considered a master of instrumentation and one of the most important representatives of modern Polish music.
