International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition
The International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition ( Międzynarodowy Konkurs Skrzypcowy im. Henryka Wieniawskiego ) is a competition for violinists that was initiated in 1935 on the 100th birthday of Henryk Wieniawski . This makes it the oldest of its kind. It has been held in Poznan every five years since 1952 .
Goal and story
The competition was founded in 1935 by Adam Wieniawski, Wieniawski's younger brother. The aim of the competition was to promote the brother's music and promote young violin talents. The competition was supposed to take place every five years from the start, but was interrupted by the Second World War in 1939 and not brought back to life until 1952. Violinists who have not yet reached the age of 30 may take part. The competition took place in Warsaw in 1935 and has been held in Poznan since 1952.
