Michael Vaiman

Michael Vaiman ( Ukrainian Михаїл Вайман Mychaiil Waiman ; * 1953 in Odessa ) is a Ukrainian violinist and university professor who lives in Germany.

Live and act

Vaiman first studied at the Stoljarsky Music School in Odessa, a school for gifted children founded in 1933 by Pyotr Solomonowitsch Stoljarski . After graduating, he deepened his studies with the violinists David Oistrach and Semyon Snitkovsky at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory . In the meantime he and Piotr Milewski won 2nd prize at the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznan (Poland) in 1977 .

In the concert career that followed, Vaiman performed at major concert halls in the USA, Europe, Japan, Israel and the former Soviet Union. As a soloist he has performed with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra , the Moscow Philharmonic, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic , the London Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Soloists under Juri Abramowitsch Bashmet , the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and the Soloist Chamber Ensemble from Tokyo.

But his passion is particularly chamber music. Together with well-known chamber musicians, Vaiman has performed at the chamber music festivals in Kuhmo , Finland, Tours , France, the Elba Festival, Italy, and the Summit Music Festival in New York. Furthermore, in 1991 he founded the chamber orchestra " The Givatayim Performers " in Israel, which he directed himself until 1996. Vaiman is also the artistic director of the “ Rencontres Estivales au Moulin d'Ande ” in the Andé commune in the Eure department .

During his time in the Soviet Union, Vaiman received his first teaching post at the Central Music School of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Then in 1989 he was appointed professor of violin at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv . From 1995 to 1999 he was a visiting professor at the Aichi Prefecturar University of Fine Art and Music in Japan. Finally, in 1999, he accepted a call to the Cologne University of Music and Dance , where he was taken on as professor for violin and chamber music in the Aachen department. Vaiman also leads master classes at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester , the Beijing Central Conservatory in China, in the USA, Japan and in many cities in Europe.

Vaiman is praised by music critics not only for his technical brilliance, neatly articulated violin tone and deep understanding of music, but also for the remarkable scope of his repertoire. It not only includes all violin sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms, Franck, Prokofjew, Schumann and Shostakovich, but also all works by Schubert for violin and piano as well as the six sonatas and partitas for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach and the six sonatas op.27 by Eugène Ysaÿe . Outside of the concert halls, Vaiman can be heard on numerous published radio, television and CD productions, especially with Dina Joffe. Together with his son, the pianist Daniel Vaiman, Michael Vaiman premiered the work " Vernal Equinox op. 94 " by Elena Firsowa in March 2000 on the occasion of her fiftieth birthday.
