Yuri Abramovich Bashmet

Juri Abramowitsch Baschmet , Russian Ю́рий Абра́мович Башме́т (born January 24, 1953 in Rostov-on-Don ) is a Russian violist and conductor . In the DNB he is listed under Jurij A. Bašmet , the English transcription Yuri Bashmet is also known .

Life

Yuri Baschmet was born in Rostov-on-Don in 1953 in the family of Abram Borissowitsch Baschmet and Maija Sinowjewna Baschmet, b. Critschewer, born. His paternal grandmother, Zilia Efimovna, studied singing at the conservatory at a young age, while his maternal grandmother, Daria Axentievna, sang hutsul songs. After lessons on the violin and his first competitive successes, he switched to the viola . He began studying viola in 1971 at the Moscow Conservatory with Vadim Borissowski, the famous viola teacher and violist of the Beethoven string quartet. After his death in 1972 he continued his studies with Fyodor Druzhinin , the dedicatee of the sonata for viola by Dmitri Shostakovich .

The first prize at the ARD music competition in 1976 marked the beginning of his international solo career. Yuri Bashmet is now regarded as one of the most important musical personalities of our time. Numerous composers wrote sonatas and concerts for him, including Sofia Gubaidulina , Gija Kanscheli and Alfred Schnittke .

For several years he has also been the conductor of the Moscow Soloists .

In 1995 Bashmet was awarded the Léonie Sonning Music Prize.

Political position

In March 2014, Bashmet signed the open letter from Russian cultural workers, in which the position of President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine and Crimea is supported.
