The Konzerthausorchester Berlin (until July 2006 the Berlin Symphony Orchestra / BSO) is one of the largest orchestras in Berlin . Christoph Eschenbach has been the orchestra's chief conductor since the 2019/20 season.

history

As the predecessor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1925 , which in turn emerged from the Blüthner Orchestra . In 1952, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (BSO) was re-established as a municipal institution in East Berlin and gained international recognition under Kurt Sanderling , chief conductor from 1960 to 1977. Numerous renowned musicians such as violinist David Oistrach and pianist Emil Gilels were regular guest soloists. Most of the concerts took place in the Metropoltheater . The orchestra played two thirds of all concerts taking place in East Berlin. Kurt Sanderling managed to build up three successful subscription series and thus a large number of regular listeners. One focus was on music by Gustav Mahler and Dmitri Shostakovich , whose works were often premiered in Germany by the BSO.

In 1977 Günther Herbig was appointed chief conductor, Claus Peter Flor took over the direction in 1984 and the orchestra was given its own venue in the form of the Schauspielhaus am Gendarmenmarkt . The building by Karl Friedrich Schinkel was converted into a concert hall.

During the tenure of the Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt (1992–1998) the BSO officially became the house orchestra at the Konzerthaus Berlin. Under its successor Eliahu Inbal , the Berlin Symphony Orchestra completed a tour of Japan with 15 concerts in 13 cities and tours to Spain, China and Korea.

Under chief conductor Lothar Zagrosek , the orchestra was renamed the Konzerthausorchester Berlin in 2006 . The chief conductor from 2012 to 2018 was the Hungarian Iván Fischer , who has been associated with the orchestra since then as an honorary conductor. Juraj Valčuha has been Principal Guest Conductor since the 2017/18 season. From the 2019/2020 season, Christoph Eschenbach will be the chief conductor of the Konzerthausorchester.

Kurt Sanderling, who died on September 18, 2011, was an honorary conductor and honorary member of the Konzerthausorchester. Michael Gielen and Eliahu Inbal were also made honorary members.

In 2017 the Konzerthausorchester set typical Berlin moments to music under the motto “You are Berlin. We are the sound. ”And the hashtag #klangberlins. In a total of 13 videos on YouTube, the musicians show what their city sounds like. The idea, concept and the willingness to experiment of the concert hall orchestra were awarded the “German Prize for Online Communication”, “ADC Peaks” as the best YouTube video of 2017 and a finalist in the “Award of Montreux”. At the “Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards”, #klangberlins also won the Golden Dolphin in the Webisodes category.
