Michael Schønwandt

Michael Schønwandt (born September 10, 1953 in Frederiksberg ) is a Danish conductor .

Schønwandt studied musicology at the University of Copenhagen and then orchestral conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London . In 1987 and 1988 Michael Schønwandt conducted Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bayreuth Festival .

Career

He has been engaged as a guest conductor by the Vienna Philharmonic , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest , the London Symphony Orchestra , the Philharmonia Orchestra , the Orchester Philharmonique de Nice and the Orchester de la Suisse Romande . With Alfred Brendel he played all of Beethoven's piano concertos in London . As an opera conductor he engaged u. a. Vienna State Opera , Opéra de Paris , Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Deutsche Oper Berlin , State Opera Berlin and Hamburg State Opera .

Schønwandt has made numerous CDs and DVD recordings. This includes the entire symphonies by Niels W. Gade and Carl Nielsen as well as the opera Masquerade by Nielsen and Der Ring des Nibelungen by Wagner .

Awards

In 2005 Schønwandt was awarded the Dannebrog Order, and in 2011 he became Commander of the Dannebrog Order.
