The International Building Exhibition (IBA) Fürst-Pückler-Land was between 2000 and 2010 an instrument of structural change in the Lower Lausitz (in southern Brandenburg , as well as in the northeastern Saxony ), an industrial landscape that decades of lignite - opencast was determined.

Projects in the region

With 30 specific individual projects in the space between the towns of Guben and Lauchhammer / Plessa and between Luckau and Bad Muskau , the IBA has been trying since 2000 to give economic, artistic and ecological impulses to structural change. Two of the projects also reached Gubin, Poland . In 2009 the project was awarded the National Prize for Integrated Urban Development and Building Culture by the Federal Ministry of Transport .

The IBA Fürst-Pückler-Land began on January 1, 2000 and ended as planned on December 31, 2010. The individual projects were completed by the end of 2012 and the International Building Exhibition Fürst-Pückler-Land GmbH was handled.

Forerunner of the Ruhr area

Its conception is similar to the well-known IBA Emscher Park in the Ruhr area (1989–1999). Just like the Ruhr area, Lusatia is also an old industrial region in the economic crisis. With the conversion of industrial facilities that are no longer required - such as the F60 visitor mine  - the careful new construction and the valorisation and staging of the bizarre "lunar landscape" of the open-cast mine, the region should be given a perspective, for example in the direction of tourism. In 2005, for example, the 500 kilometer long Fürst-Pückler-Weg long -distance cycle path was inaugurated, which connects almost all IBA projects.
