Sielmann's natural landscape Wanninchen is the name of an approximately 3300 hectare wilderness area that has been created in a former open-cast lignite mine in Lower Lusatia near Luckau since 2000 . It is a project by the animal filmmaker and ecology professor Heinz Sielmann , which is being carried out by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation .

background

Open- cast lignite mining has permanently changed large parts of eastern Germany , including in Niederlausitz . In the former open-cast mining area "Schlabendorfer Felder", southwest of the Spreewald , in the Niederlausitzer Landücken nature park , lignite was mined from 1961 to 1991 with the help of excavators and conveyor bridges . The landscape and the water balance of the region were influenced to a great extent by humans.

For the flora and fauna, the destruction meant the loss of their traditional habitats. Black stork , crane , sundew and other rare species disappeared from the area. But shortly after the lignite mining ended, the water level began to rise again. The groundwater is increasingly filling the remaining open pit holes. Extensive bodies of water and wetlands are created.

In 1996 the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district put the first parts of the area under nature protection . Nature had again taken possession of the former mining dumps and the open-cast mine holes. The Heinz Sielmann Foundation has acquired more than 3,200 hectares of land here since 2000 so that nature can continue to develop undisturbed. Rare, dry sand turfs have formed on the tilting floors, and the water bodies and their surroundings are already valuable breeding, resting and feeding areas for threatened birds. In the steep walls build sand martins their nests. The large structural diversity of the surfaces offers a habitat for a multitude of heat-loving insects. So pioneers such as the sand earwig or the sand bug were the first to return to the open dumps and sandy areas.

Where the pits fill with water, also new types had joined up: cross and green toad and fire-bellied toad spawn in shallow, sunny areas of new lakes formed. This new habitat is also attractive for many bird species, such as the little ringed plover and hoopoe . Migratory birds such as cranes and wild geese come to rest here in spring and autumn.

The Heinz Sielmann Natur-Erlebniszentrum Wanninchen (formerly "Naturparkzentrum Wanninchen") is located directly on the edge of the former opencast mine. It is the only building that the excavators from the Wanninchen village left over. Since summer 2002 it has been a meeting point for those interested in nature - especially for children and young people. The institution is supported by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation in cooperation with the biological working group "Alwin Arndt" Luckau e. V. The largely barrier-free area and the exhibition are currently under renovation and are expected to reopen in September. On the site there is, among other things, a reptile enclosure, a pond, a small moor, a boulder garden and an artificial sand martin nest wall in which up to 130 pairs of birds can breed at the same time. There is also a playground and two observation towers on the site , which provide a view of the Schlabendorfer See and the surrounding area. A bare tree is a reminder “as a memorial” with directions and distance information of the places that disappeared due to the opencast mine.

The Heinz Sielmann Foundation developed a wide-ranging nature experience program “Days full of miracles”, which deals with the region and “life after coal”. This includes a holiday program, handicraft afternoons and other events, such as crane tours, which are offered every autumn.

In 2005 the project was included in the “New Landscapes” focus of the International Building Exhibition Fürst-Pückler-Land (IBA). Together with the Grünhaus nature reserve and the major Saxon nature conservation project Lausitzer Seenland , “alternatives and necessary additions to the purely touristic development of the post-mining lakes ” are shown.
