The Schlabendorfer See ( Lower Sorbian Chóžyšćański jazor ) is located in the Lusatian Lakeland in the place of the same name Schlabendorf am See , between the cities of Luckau and Calau in Niederlausitz . Its water surface is about 600 hectares.

history

The lake was created by flooding the former Schlabendorf-Süd open-cast lignite mine. The end of the flooding was in 2012. The lake is only fed by groundwater, as measures to reinforce the bank areas were intended to cause the water level to rise slowly.

Coal production took place from 1976 until the political change in 1990. The drainage began in 1972, followed by exploration dredging in 1975. Here there was a 4 meter thick coal seam under an overburden of 24 meters. The total output was 171.2 million tons of brown coal . In the course of the progressing opencast mining , the places Gliechow, Pademagk, Stiebsdorf, Presenchen and Wanninchen disappeared.

Today the lake is developed for tourism. B. the recreation and leisure center Marina Schlabendorf am See . If nature was badly affected for decades, the interests of flora and fauna are now being protected. Two thirds of the lake belong to the Heinz Sielmann Foundation , which contributes to the preservation of the near-natural areas and rare animal and plant species. In the interest of gentle tourism, the operation of motor boats on the lake is not permitted.

Natural space

The crane rest has become a fixed annual highlight in the tourist use of the region. Ornithology enthusiasts from all over Europe come to Schlabendorf am See in autumn to watch the birds. Up to 4,000 cranes and 70,000 Nordic geese gather and stop here at the same time every autumn.

The Borcheltsbusch, an approximately 300 hectare moor between Freesdorf, Frankendorf and Görlsdorf north of the lake, is a traditional crane roost. From the 20 meter high observation tower on the edge of the moor you can experience the big gray birds almost up close - ideally an hour before sunset or just before sunrise. The Heinz Sielmann Foundation Wanninchen and the Naturwacht of the Niederlausitzer Landücken Nature Park offer regular guided tours from August to October.

In addition, little ringed plovers, gray shrike, red-backed shrike, brown and stonechat, quail, wheatear, woodlark, hoopoe, golden-bellied duck, and horned harrier are at home in Sielmann's natural landscape.

Freetime activities

Marina in Schlabendorf am See

With its extension of 2.5 kilometers in the NW-SE direction and just under 1.5 kilometers in the NE-SW direction, the Schlabendorfer See offers good water sports opportunities. Due to the wide landscape, there are suitable wind conditions for sailing and surfing. Since the lake is still under mining law, special safety regulations apply. Water sports enthusiasts must inform themselves about the safety regulations and accept the terms of use before setting off. The water sports club Schlabendorf e. V.

There are five bike paths past the lake, such as B. the Fürst-Pückler-Weg , the Niederlausitzer mining tour and the crane cycle path .

Due to the instability of the subsoil consisting of tilted sand and a series of larger landslides, the entire area south of the lake is currently completely closed. It is currently expected that the renovation will end in 2027 at the earliest, although individual areas can also be released again much earlier. Most recently, at the end of 2012, the exclusion zone was extended just to the northern edge of Fürstlich Drehna . The bicycle and hiking trails laid out in the former open-cast mine can therefore currently not be used, but there are equally beautiful alternative routes that lead the area either south via Mallenchen, Fürstlich-Drehna and Bergen, or north via Zinnitz , the nearest town in an easterly direction, among others drive around on the park paths of the Zinnitz Castle Park .
