The Heinz Sielmann Foundation was founded in 1994 by Heinz Sielmann and his wife Inge Sielmann as a foundation under civil law under the motto "Nature conservation as a positive philosophy of life". The seat of the foundation is in Duderstadt (Lower Saxony), the headquarters at Gut Herbigshagen near Duderstadt.
aims
The foundation pursues four goals under the motto "Diversity is our nature":
- Introduce people, especially children and young people, to a positive approach to nature through personal experience.
- The last refuges for rare animal and plant species have been preserved.
- Raising public awareness of nature and its protection.
- Preserve the Heinz Sielmann archive of nature films.
The foundation only pursues charitable purposes. It operates and supports a large number of biotope and species protection projects throughout Germany. It also acquires large landscapes itself in order to preserve them permanently for nature conservation and to ensure biodiversity there. She also works with partners abroad.
advancement
To protect nature and the environment, in particular to maintain the diversity of fauna and flora , the foundation also acts as a funding institution. It supports projects outside of government programs in the Federal Republic of Germany. If the project subject or content is directly related to nature and environmental issues in Germany, the Heinz Sielmann Foundation can in individual cases also support projects outside the Federal Republic of Germany that comply with the tax code . Depending on the project, funding can take the form of total or partial funding.

The estate is the regional environmental education center of the State of Lower Saxony, an extracurricular learning center for school classes, an exhibition space and has up to 100,000 guests annually. Nature trail, school farm, farm garden, beekeeping, orchards, fallow deer enclosure and stables for rare breeds of livestock are some of the nature experience offers. Every year on Easter Monday the herb market takes place on the estate.
On the northern edge of the estate is the Franz von Assisi chapel, in which the urn of the foundation's founder Heinz Sielmann was buried in 2006 and the urn of his wife Inge in 2019.
