The festival mascot

Green Screen is an international nature film festival that has been taking place in Eckernförde every year since 2007 .

Film festival

In the Baltic Sea resort of Eckernförde and neighboring towns in Schleswig-Holstein , around 100 current nature documentaries will be shown for five days in September . With around 30,000 visitors, it is the largest nature film festival in Europe . The festival primarily presents aesthetic nature films as well as ecological-critical contributions. Besides NaturVision, Green Screen is one of the largest international nature and animal film festivals in Germany.

Film competition

Each year, more than two hundred films are submitted to the jury and compete for prizes in numerous categories. One of the prizes coveted by experts has been the Heinz Sielmann Film Prize, endowed with 7,500 euros (previously 5,000 euros) and donated by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation , since 2008 .

Industry get-together

Green Screen is a meeting point for filmmakers and program managers from television stations from all over the world. In addition to the industry get-together, the festival also offers specialist seminars for filmmakers and film producers .

Nature film education

Green Screen emphasizes nature education work with children and young people, of which around 8,000 are reached every year. You will discuss the films shown with filmmakers and scientists or produce nature documentaries yourself under supervision. The festival aims to sensitize young people in particular to the protection of nature. The Green Screen School Cinema Weeks have existed since 2013: screenings of nature documentaries are organized for schoolchildren in cooperation with schools.

history

Green Screen has existed since 2007 and has grown continuously since its inception. Of the last 30,000 visitors, around 15,000 come to the festival days and a further 15,000 to film screenings during the year in northern Germany.

organization

Behind the festival is the "Förderverein GREEN SCREEN Eckernförde eV" founded in 2006. The aim of the association is the establishment and permanent support of an international nature film festival in Eckernförde. The association, recognized as a non-profit organization since 2007, has around 240 members.

From the beginning until 2016 , the festival director was Gerald Grote , who handed over the office to Dirk Steffens . Markus Behrens is the full-time managing director in the organization office. Since the festival was founded, over 100 volunteers have been involved in Eckernförde every year. The festival is financed by numerous regional sponsors. The broad voluntary commitment and the regional sponsors have for years demonstrated the great acceptance and high reputation of the festival, as well as its strong roots in the region.
