Herbert Ostwald

Herbert Ostwald (* 1960 in Berlin ) is a German journalist , director and documentary filmmaker . He is considered one of the most renowned German representatives of this genre.

Life

Herbert Ostwald attended the Askanische Oberschule in Berlin-Tempelhof from 1972 to 1978 , where he also passed his Abitur. From 1979 to 1987 he studied at the Free University of Berlin with a degree in biology .

He has worked as a journalist since 1987, initially until 1995 as a reporter for the Sender Freies Berlin (SFB) radio. At the same time he also wrote articles for daily newspapers and magazines. 1993/1994 he was brief editor for politics, universities and science at the daily newspaper Neue Zeit until it was discontinued after the last edition on July 5, 1994.

Ostwald has been working primarily for television since 1995. He began with the series Ostwalds Tierleben , which he moderated and ran from 1995 to 1998 on DW-TV , Deutsche Welle's German international television station . At the same time, he trained as a documentary filmmaker at the Wildlife Filmmaking School in Sundsvall in 1997 and at the Discovery Campus Masterschool in Munich in 2002 . He has shot numerous nature and environmental documentaries since 1995, some of which he also produced himself with his company wild.doc Filmproduktion , initially for the WDR series Abenteuer Erde , later also for ZDF and ARTE . He works regularly with the cameramen Roland Gockel and Erik Sick. In 2003 he also contributed a series of short articles for Die Sendung mit der Maus , later also for the TV series W for Knowledge . As a writer and director, Ostwald works regularly with renowned production companies, e. B. In 2001, the documentary My Dear Beaver made him internationally known . One of his most elaborate productions is the full-length oak documentary for ZDF and Arte Der Baum der Trees - Mysterious Journey into the World of Oaks (2004), which was partly shot in the Reinhardswald and worked with several cameramen for the Ostwald, including Andreas Kieling . Ostwald directed the ARD documentary "Bruno, the bear without a passport" (2012), which was moderated by the actor Hannes Jaenicke.

Herbert Ostwald also became known for his documentaries about Kenya , in whose capital Nairobi he also lived from 2002 to 2008. In 2005, in Nacktmulle - Africa's Wild Wightens , he documented the way of life of these East African sand graves for the first time and at the same time the research work of the German biologist Rosie Koch on these rodents in the Kenyan Meru National Park . Also in 2005 he published a documentary about the Mount Kenya massif . In Arabuko Sokoke National Park was created goblins of the coastal forest - The elephant shrew Arabuko (2008). And in Dodo - Between Corrugated Iron and World Stage (2009) Ostwald portrayed the Kenyan soccer player Doreen “Dodo” Nabwire , who later played for Werder Bremen and 1. FC Cologne in the second women's division.

The documentary filmmaker regularly participates in festivals with his films and has received numerous national and international awards. The production Räumkommando Giant Rat - Sniffers for Mine Search , which shows the use of African giant hamster rats in clearing land mines , was particularly successful . In 2014 Ostwald traveled to Europe and Asia with Cologne Zoo Director Theo Pagel to document the success of zoo-initiated species protection projects in two films. With the Austrian production company terra mater and National Geographic Wild (USA), Ostwald created the documentation "Giraffes - Giants up close" in 2015, which received a lot of international recognition. And in 2016 he headed the production on Asian cheetahs in Iran ("Phantoms of the Desert") on behalf of ZDF / Arte. In October 2018 Ostwald won the science prize "Panda Award" at the largest international nature film festival "wildscreen" in Bristol / England for "naked mole rats - superheroes of research".

Ostwald is a member of the Documentary Film Working Group (AG DOK). In 2010 and 2018 he was a member of the jury of the Nature Film Festival Green Screen , and in 2019 of the jury of the Darß Nature Film Festival . Ostwald also works as a lecturer for the Deutsche Welle Academy and the Goethe Institute (in 2010 in Thailand as a lecturer for a student workshop as part of the SEADocs festival). In 2018 he produced the video spot "Spatz muss be!" as part of the city administration's biodiversity campaign.

Ostwald is the author of several non-fiction and illustrated children's books. He lives in Cologne .
