Andreas Kieling (born November 4, 1959 in Gotha ) is a German documentary filmmaker , film producer and author with a focus on nature, animal and adventure topics.

Life

According to his own statements, Andreas Kieling fled the GDR via Czechoslovakia and Austria to West Germany in 1976 at the age of 16 and was shot at by a border guard while swimming across the Danube . He was shot in the back. In West Germany he hired from 1977 to 1980 as a seaman for overseas trips on German merchant ships. From 1980 to 1983 he trained as a professional hunter in various North German forestry offices , especially in the Lanze and Lomitz districts in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district . Between 1986 and 1990 Kieling undertook long professional stays abroad: in 1988 a year as a forest consultant in the People's Republic of China and in 1989 six months in India and Pakistan .

In 1991 he began his career as a documentary filmmaker . He has been traveling to Alaska since 1992 ; on every trip he faced a special challenge. Kieling described his experiences in several books. Most recently, he explored the Yukon over 3000 kilometers in length from its source to its mouth in the Bering Sea . This trip resulted in a three-part documentary that was shown on ARD in January 2007 . On the middle stage of his journey, the animal filmmaker was accompanied by his wife Birgit and his two sons Erik and Thore. They followed in the tracks of the prospectors, filmed moose with their calves, explored abandoned camps for adventurers and the wreck of a paddle steamer. The third episode, Adventure Yukon - The Long Road to the Arctic Ocean , received the Panda Award at the Wildscreen Festival in Bristol in October 2008 .

In May 2008 and May 2011, ZDF showed the three-part series Expeditions to the Last of their Kind , not to be confused with the BBC television series The Last of their Kind (series 1989, book 1990, series 2009) by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine . In 2009, Andreas Kieling went on a hike across Germany for the ZDF / Arte production Mitten im Wild Deutschland. He followed the Green Belt along the former death strip . At the beginning of June 2010 his five-part series Mitten in South Africa was broadcast in HDTV on Arte . It describes the host country of the 2010 soccer World Cup.

On January 3, 2015, Andreas Kieling had a breakdown with temporary blindness after an event in Chemnitz. The examinations revealed a heavily bleeding pituitary adenoma . Andreas Kieling is married, has two sons and lives on a farm in Hümmel in the Eifel . The actor Wolfgang Kieling was his great-uncle.

Positions

With a video from July 14, 2016, Kieling was critical of wind energy and its operators. He shows some dead birds and two dead bats and says that the wind turbine towering behind him killed these animals within a very short time. He also came to the conclusion that proponents of wind power had dismantled two black stork nests in the area in order to prevent conservationists from objecting to the further expansion of the wind farm . The Facebook video was viewed over 500,000 times and shared around 10,000 times within three days by July 17, 2016.

On the Maischberger broadcast , Kieling explained that the regulation of the wolf takes place by itself through the predator-prey relationship . Nature regulates itself in its own way. Carina Konrad from the FDP questioned the study on insect mortality, Kieling disapproved.

criticism

Kieling received criticism in April 2012 for the ZDF documentary Kielings Wildes Deutschland , after it became known that he passed off wolfhounds for wolves in it. Kieling commented on this in a video on its website.

In August 2016, Kieling dealt critically with the total herbicide glyphosate in a video message on his Facebook page . As a result, various von Kieling's statements were criticized as technically incorrect. He was also accused of using a fuel canister as a glyphosate canister in the video, as its red signal effect could better convey his message. Andreas Kieling responded to the criticism in another video message, but defended his statements as justified "in order to point out grievances".

Honors

Kieling received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in October 2015 for his many years of work as a wildlife filmmaker and the associated public relations work .
