Jan Fleischhauer (2019)

Jan Fleischhauer (* 1962 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist , columnist and author . From 1989 to 2019 he worked for Spiegel , since August 2019 he has worked for Focus .

Life

Jan Fleischhauer grew up in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel and attended the Grootmoor grammar school from 1974 to 1983 . His mother joined the SPD in 1963 , his father Dietrich Fleischhauer was initially a reporter and later a press spokesman for the NDR . As a teenager, Fleischhauer was involved in the Evangelical Church , but later resigned.

Fleischhauer studied literature and philosophy at the University of Hamburg and graduated with a master's degree . He then attended the Henri Nannen School of Journalism. Since 1989 he has been working as an editor at the news magazine Der Spiegel , including as a reporter in Leipzig (1991), as deputy head of the economic department and deputy head of the capital city office. From 2001 to 2005 he was a business correspondent in New York . Since 2008 he has been the author of Spiegel in Berlin . In 2019, Fleischhauer left Spiegel after 30 years to switch to Burda-Verlag.

Journalism

His first book Unter Linken was published in 2009. In it, he justified his development as a conservative with the dogmatism of his social-democratic parents and similar milieus . The work became the “best-selling political non-fiction book of the year”. Fleischhauer wrote a blog about the book. The documentary based on it uses the methods of the filmmaker Michael Moore and shows interviews with Frank Bsirske and Christian Ströbele , among others . In 2014 Fleischhauer co-wrote the film The resignation about the affair of the former Federal President Christian Wulff .

Between January 2011 and June 2019 he wrote the column S.PON - The Black Channel for Spiegel Online , which has also been included in the print edition since May 2014. There he alternated with Jakob Augstein and Markus Feldenkirchen , since issue 45 in 2018, which appeared at the end of October, only with Feldenkirchen. In May 2012, Fleischhauer's second book The Black Channel - What You Always Suspected of Left, But Never Dare to Say , was published, a collection of slightly revised texts from the Spiegel-Online column.

In his autobiographical book with the title Everything is Better than Another Day with You , published in 2017 , Fleischhauer presented the problems after his divorce in the summer of 2011 in a literary description.

Fleischhauer was the author of the weblog The Axis of the Good and 2010 author on freiewelt.net as well as on the website of the evangelical association of the German Institute for Youth and Society .

After eight and a half years, “The Black Channel” on Spiegel online ended in July 2019. The running headline is still used on Focus.de. After thirty years with Spiegel, Fleischhauer left the Hamburg news magazine and switched to Burda-Verlag as a member of the editor-in-chief of Focus magazine with effect from August 1, 2019. The change was commented on several times in the media, as Fleischhauer's conservative positions were less opposed to the political orientation of Focus be as that of the mirror. Fleischhauer writes his column for Focus every Saturday, which is still called "The Black Channel". He had video columns on Bunte.de and Focus Online.

From April to July 2020, he and Jakob Augstein presented the podcast The Curve on the COVID-19 pandemic and the satirical format Fleischhauer - 9 Minuten Netto on ServusTV every Wednesday . He uses props such as Playmobil figures, which are known from the Harald Schmidt Show . In a broadcast in May 2020, he put on an aluminum hat, alluding to conspiracy theorists . The format is also offered as a podcast.

Fleischhauer lives with his family in Pullach in the Isar valley in the Munich district . Before that he lived in Munich-Schwabing . Due to the contact restrictions during the corona pandemic, he could not say goodbye to his father in 2020, who died in a Hamburg retirement home.

Controversy

In January 2012 Jan Fleischhauer compared the Italian people with Francesco Schettino , the captain of the Costa Concordia in SPON - The Black Channel . Italian newspapers criticized this as a racist tone. In a direct reaction published by SPON below the column, the Italian ambassador to Germany recommended “generalizations based on race should be abandoned” and criticized Fleischhauer's contribution as “vulgar and banal assertions”. The Italian newspaper Il Giornale appeared on January 27, the day of commemoration of the victims of National Socialism , with the title “We have Schettino, you have Auschwitz”.

In March 2019, the satirist and TV presenter Jan Böhmermann criticized the fact that Fleischhauer had attended Matthias Matussek's celebration of his 65th birthday. This came under fire because the guests included representatives of the New Right , including a convicted member of the Identitarian Movement and Dieter Stein , publisher of the weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit . In his column, Fleischhauer replied to the criticism by asking whether friendships that had arisen earlier or by chance should be ended if political views developed differently. Matussek later stated that he was no longer friends with Fleischhauer after he had declared him crazy.

In April 2020, the media journalist Stefan Niggemeier criticized Fleischhauer's statements about the corona pandemic in an article on Übermedien . In his podcast with Jakob Augstein, Fleischhauer refuses to undertake journalistic research on the level and significance of the number of reproductions that are decisive for political decisions and instead just ask questions without being interested in serious answers. Fleischhauer replied several times that despite numerous researches and discussions with science journalists, he had not been able to determine the exact value given by the Robert Koch Institute . In an interview, he said he was a very good student at math and jokingly asked Niggemeier to publish his math graduation.

Reception in popular culture

In the 2014 debate about gender equitable language triggered by Lann Hornscheidt , the author Robin Detje Fleischhauer and journalists Ulf Poschardt , Harald Martenstein and Matthias Matussek criticized it as a journalistic power, which he called "Ulfharaldjanmatthias". In the play Wenn du tanzt by the band Von Wegen Lisbeth (2016) it says: “ Ackermann , Merkel , Jan / Fleischhauer, Voldemort / Nice people, when you dance”. In the television program Neo Magazin Royale , Sidekick Ralf Kabelka appeared several times until 2019 in the role of Spiegel-Online columnist Ralf Flauscheier . An exaggeratedly sexist language was used in the Einspielern, loosely based on Fleischhauer's conservative positions. The music video for the song Left Radical (2019) by the band Egotronic alludes to Matthias Matussek's birthday party, for whose visit Fleischhauer was criticized.

The weekly newspaper Freitag asks in its questionnaire Communism is ...? celebrities regularly ask the question “Jan Fleischhauer or Margarete Stokowski?”. The decision question alludes to the fact that the columns by Fleischhauer and the feminist author Margarete Stokowski (both formerly at Spiegel Online) are seen as politically opposite. Arno Frank remarked in an article for Taz.futurzwei in 2020 under the heading “ Butcher or Stokowski?” That the two faced each other “like warlords of opinion at one another ”.
