Life

Matussek attended the Jesuit- run Aloisiuskolleg in Bonn-Bad Godesberg for three years and then switched to the Karls-Gymnasium in Stuttgart , where he graduated from high school. He then began studying American and German and comparative literature at the Free University of Berlin . After the intermediate examination, he broke off his studies and switched to the German School of Journalism in Munich , which he graduated with a diploma in 1977. Then he started as a culture editor for the Berlin newspaper Der Abend . After his activities for the evening and for the star , he went to the mirror in 1987 . From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the Day of German Unity , he reported as a special correspondent from East Berlin , for which he was awarded the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize in 1991 . Matussek then headed the Spiegel offices in New York (1992), Rio de Janeiro (1999) and London (2003). From 2005 to 2008 he was head of the culture department at Spiegel . Weekly from October 2006 to April 2011, then in loose succession until January 2014, Matussek published a vlog called Matussek's Kulturtipp on Spiegel Online . At the end of October 2013 he moved to Axel Springer AG , where he was dismissed as a columnist for the daily newspaper Die Welt in November 2015 .

Positions

Matthias Matussek 2011

Through articles and books such as Die vaterlose Gesellschaft (1998), We Germans (2006) and The Catholic Adventure (2011) - all of which are German bestsellers - Matussek repeatedly addressed controversial issues. He represents conservative values such as faith, family or patriotism in public .

In 2009 he criticized the current German conservatism, which in his view was leading a “ class struggle from above”, and described himself as an “accidental left”. As an “unreliable conservative” and the son of a CDU mayor, he viewed the class struggle from above as a “belated culture war in which the middle class defeated the 68ers once again, as in a constant sedan celebration of old and young conservatives”. The conservative Juste milieu , “which has had the most severe economic panic attacks behind it”, is only concerned with “patting itself on the shoulder with almost unbearable complacency”. Today's conservatism has "sunk into a dreary lifestyle bourgeoisie and belated settlements with the left opponent of yore" and has "smashed values, more radically than the left could ever have".

In 2010, in a “contribution to the debate” for Der Spiegel, he referred to the Sarrazin debate as a cipher “for the outrage at how the justice milieu of the consensus society sent the hall protection to escort a disturbing heckler outside”. Debates on identity (e.g. cultural identity ) and dominant cultures are being conducted in an increasingly globalized world, which means “only an insistence on traditions and values, which also include religion”. Matussek judged some passages of the Sarrazin book Germany is abolishing: "In them the melancholy is expressed about the fact that the Germans are not only working demographically on their disappearance, but also saying goodbye to their cultural and educational horizons." Pegida movement accused Matussek in 2014 on Facebook : "Anyone who takes part in the ritual kicking against these people has the sentiments of Hitler Youth."

By his own admission, Matussek is a practicing Catholic who regularly confesses that it is “more exonerating” than “waiting for the very big final account from a gracious God, as Protestants do”. In 2011 he commented on his Catholicism as follows: “I am as passionately Catholic as I was a Marxist forty years ago. Why? Because my association is under attack. ”He is a supporter of the Catholic lay movement Germany pro Papa . Furthermore, he signed a counter-memorandum to Church 2011 under the title "Petition pro Ecclesia" : A necessary departure and he advocates the preservation of celibacy , but in his book The Catholic Adventure criticizes the church tax as a "modern form of indulgence trade " . In September 2012 the Catholic Church in Germany made a decision with the tenor No sacraments without church tax . Matussek asked himself “how suspicious the German Catholic Church [must] be about tying the sacraments to membership fees” and predicted “This is how it will collapse: the old die, the young stay away”; he recommended that the church should be based on voluntariness. In September 2015, he spoke out against the recognition of same-sex marriage in Germany in a dispute with Henny Engels from the LSVD board. On the online page of the debate magazine The European , Matussek also referred to homosexuality as "nature's fault" and compared it to deafness and hereditary diseases such as maple syrup disease . At a “Journalistic Colloquium” in 2012 at the University of Eichstätt , he contradicted the thesis that Islam belongs to Germany; rather, he referred to this religion as a "threat" which u. a. The result is that "hours of checks at airports " are carried out.

After the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015 , Matussek said on his Facebook account: “I guess the terror of Paris will also move our debates about open borders and a quarter of a million unregistered young Islamic men in the country in a completely new and fresh direction. “He ended this assessment with a ' smiley ', the emoticon for joy. In particular, the smiling smiley was criticized as inappropriate in this context. The editor-in-chief of the world , Jan-Eric Peters , called the posting - also via Facebook - "crazy" and distanced himself from Matussek's statement. On November 17, 2015, Die Welt parted ways with its columnist with "immediate effect". Shortly afterwards, on November 21, 2015, Matussek gave the laudation at the award ceremony of the Gerhard Löwenthal Prize to Heimo Schwilk , which is awarded by the weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit , which is regarded as the mouthpiece of the New Right .

In early 2017, Matussek got into the media when he was interested in a position offered by the satirical magazine Titanic on the right-wing populist news and opinion website Breitbart News Network .

In 2017 Matussek said that the “funny actions” of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement observed by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution were “just so cool”. In July 2017 an article appeared in which he outlined his transformation "to today's Matussek" and described himself as a "sympathizer of the identities".

Matussek publicly supported the AfD and was one of the first signatories of Vera Lengsfeld's Joint Declaration 2018 initiative . In its wording, Germany is being damaged by “illegal mass immigration” and solidarity is expressed with peaceful demonstrators who are demonstrating for the restoration of the “constitutional order at the borders of our country”. In addition to Matussek, Thilo Sarrazin , Henryk M. Broder , Uwe Tellkamp and Uwe Steimle signed the declaration.

Since January 2018 Matussek has published articles in the Catholic weekly newspaper Die Tagespost . On March 19, 2018, he appeared as a speaker at the Monday “Merkel must go” rally in front of Hamburg Dammtor train station and warned about 200 participants about “ Islamization ”. He sees a "flood of Muslim bodybuilders" in the country.

Matussek does not consider climate change to be a man-made phenomenon . The weather, according to Matussek, is “good God”. He described the Swedish climate protection activist Greta Thunberg as a “holy figure of a substitute religion”.

In March 2019, the satirist and television presenter Jan Böhmermann announced that at Matussek's birthday party a convicted member of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement , Erika Steinbach , the head of the AfD- affiliated Desiderius Erasmus Foundation , Andreas Lombard , editor-in-chief of Cato magazine , and Dieter Stein , publisher of the weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit , took part. This met with media coverage.

Matussek is a guest author on the Axis of the Good as well as on Tichys Insight , the Swiss World Week , Deutschland-Kurier , Cato and Tumult. Quarterly for Consensus Disruption .

Legal disputes

On August 10, 2013, ARD broadcast an episode of the Krömer - Late Night Show , in which Kurt Krömer described his guest Matussek as a " sneaky asshole " and a " puff-goer ". Matussek tried unsuccessfully, with the help of his lawyer Joachim Steinhöfel, to prevent the broadcast in advance by means of an injunction. The Hamburg Higher Regional Court rejected this request in the second instance because it was satire, Matussek had to be informed about the character of the program and he had himself involved accordingly by calling Krömer a “stupid pig”.

After the journalist Silke Burmester in her column for the Aug. 14, 2013 The daily Matussek and the judgment under the title The Big Quiz of Puffgänger had been identified, procured Matussek before the District Court of Cologne an injunction injunction against them.

reception

Matussek served as a template for the character of the reporter "Leo Lattke" in Thomas Brussig's turnaround novel How it shines . Brussig, who wrote the foreword to Matussek's Palace Hotel or How Unity fell over Germany , had been able to observe him after the fall of the Berlin Wall in the Berlin Palace Hotel , from where Matussek reported on the GDR for Spiegel magazine and where Brussig worked as a porter. He describes the journalist Lattke as an unpleasant and irritable person, but also as an ingenious reporter - a description that Matussek's journalist colleagues thought was "fairly realistic".

Alexander Wallasch wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2011 : “Matussek obviously really believes. That is surely the most haunting insight to be gained from the book The Catholic Adventure . The author speaks from a fortress: 'I think Catholic, I feel and laugh and rage Catholic, I sin, I confess, I look Catholic at the world.' "

Theology professor Rainer Kampling wrote in 2011 on Deutschlandradio Kultur about The Catholic Adventure : “Matussek thinks and writes in a theological vacuum that he claims to be his childhood beliefs - self-loving, arrogant and ignoring faith. About Catholicism, its theological depth, its wealth of intellectual achievement, about its strict school of thought and faith or the history of the Church, one learns terrifyingly little in the 358 pages of the book [...] This book is embarrassing - in the choice of words, in the pride of the Author on his theological illiteracy, in his sloppiness. And it is embarrassing to think that someone can believe that it is now Catholic. [...] "

The Munich theologian Friedrich Wilhelm Graf found on the same book in the FAZ feature pages that Matussek relies on “aggressive polemics, calculated insults, radical subjectivity and professional rampage”. "Matussek is far from intellectual virtues such as thoughtfulness, working on concepts, discernment and readiness for self-criticism." That Curia Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes praised this collection of "bad essays and good interviews" as "a kaleidoscope of faith" and "real impulse to apostolate" only show "the intellectual crisis of German Catholicism".

The Rheinische Post editor Reinhold Michels described Matussek's appearance at a panel discussion in 2012 and wrote a. a .: "[...] Matussek, who is cautiously described with the label 'passionate traditional Catholic' [...]. Matussek praised 'all the wonderful Catholic folklore', which he always found supportive. "

At the end of 2012 Matussek published his novella The Apocalypse after Richard . The critic Hellmuth Karasek spoke of a “feat”: “a pious Christmas story […] with miracles and an apocalyptic end - but full of warmth, yes, wit”, and Stephan Sattler judged in the Zurich Weltwoche that Matussek had “succeeded in creating a piece of extremely lively prose , full of wit, but also tenderness ”.

In February 2014, Matussek made a polemic on the Internet portal of the world in response to a program on Menschen bei Maischberger on the subject of homophobia that he was “probably homophobic, and that's a good thing”. Two world editors criticized this as “an insult not only for homosexuals, but for love as a whole” and as “unchristian”. The Tagesspiegel accused Matussek of being an “almost fanatical Catholic” and raised the question of whether homophobia, like other phobias, can be cured. The media journalist Stefan Niggemeier also took up the topic and criticized on his blog, among other things, that Matussek misinterpreted several fundamental aspects in his comments on the homosexuality debate or did not understand them at all. Matussek then insinuated that he argued "like a Hitler Youth ". Alan Posener explains his attitude: “So why in God's name do I want to defend Matthias Matussek? Because he says nothing else than what is in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. ” Posener also views the association of homophobia and anti-Semitism accused of Matussek from a different perspective:“ That Matussek thinks homophobia and Jew phobia together is also correct because it is historical almost always belong together. "

In the article “Überwerfung” published in June 2018, ZEIT reporter Malte Henk portrayed him and traced Matussek's path from SPIEGEL reporter to representative of the New Right .

Matussek is the son of CDU politician Josef Matussek and has four brothers, u. a. the diplomat Thomas Matussek and Peter Matussek , professor for media aesthetics at the University of Siegen .
