The Deutschland-Kurier is a right-wing populist publication that has been appearing in Germany since July 2017 and was initially published in print by the AfD- affiliated association for the preservation of the rule of law and civil liberties . The last documented print edition is from December 19, 2018. Since October 2018, a Conservare Communications GmbH based in Hamburg has been named as the publisher. The company's managing director and editor-in-chief of the publication is David Bendels .

Profile and content evaluation

The publication is considered a supporter newspaper for the AfD . The editor announced it as a "conservative tabloid". The new publisher from 2018, Conservare Communications , names among other things "political consulting, management consulting, political communication, political marketing, corporate communication, strategic communication" as fields of activity.

The media scientist Lutz Frühbrodt said on Deutschlandfunk that the selection of the columnists was an indication that the Deutschland-Kurier was connected to the AfD, even if it was not institutionally linked to the party. The tone and content are definitely close to the AfD, if not to be assigned to the völkisch-nationalistwing ” of the party. In terms of content, “it is primarily about“ opinion and campaign journalism ”.” Frühbrodt assumes that the Deutschland-Kurier will open up and bind older voters for the AfD who are “not quite as internet-savvy”.

The media branch service Meedia assesses the publication as a "prime example of a medium with" colored "news", since opinion contributions are not marked as such and are not presented clearly separated from news. Nothing is offered that goes “beyond clumsy regulars' table level”. The online lexicon Lobbypedia operated by Lobbycontrol assesses the Deutschland-Kurier “as a continuation of the election campaign for the AfD by other means”. Apart from politics, it does not contain any other topics. According to Welt , the newspaper falls under the category of “right-wing national extreme boulevard ”, the headlines were similar to those of a satirical magazine, but were meant seriously. The NZZ am Sonntag described the Deutschland-Kurier as a "" picture "for AfD voters", while the Wirtschaftswoche called it a "mixture of Breitbart and picture ".

The Correctiv Research Center has demonstrated that claims presented as facts in the first edition were incorrect. In addition, the figures given were excessive or already out of date.

editor

The Deutschland-Kurier was published by the Association for the Preservation of the Rule of Law and Civil Liberties until October 2018 . He had previously published the free pamphlet Extrablatt as campaign aid for the AfD and supported the party with campaigns worth millions. The chairman and spokesman for the association is PR consultant David Bendels , who is also the publication's editor-in-chief .

Since October 2018, Conservare Communications GmbH , whose managing director is David Bendels, has been named as the new publisher . As with the predecessor Extrablatt, the design, graphics and typesetting were conceived by PR consultant Alexander Segert's Swiss Goal AG , which is also responsible for campaigning for the right-wing populist Swiss People's Party .

history

For the first time, the Deutschland-Kurier in Berlin was distributed free of charge in July 2017 in two stages with a total circulation of 600,000. It was originally planned to bring the paper to the market later as a regular weekly newspaper and to offer subscriptions. The Deutschland-Kurier was distributed several times as a supplement to advertising papers before election campaigns.

The last print edition recorded in the journal database of the German National Library was dated December 19, 2018. Since then, the Deutschland-Kurier has appeared at least online.

financing

The former publisher, the Association for the Preservation of the Rule of Law and Civil Liberties , was financed, according to editor-in-chief David Bendels, from donations from over 14,000 supporters of the association. However, there are indications that AfD-affiliated donors such as August von Finck and the Swiss PR agency Goal AG from Alexander Segert are involved. The club denies that; The AfD filed a main action against the association to stop advertising for the AfD. Lobby Control estimated the value of the association's pro-AfD campaigns to be in the double-digit millions.

The German Council for Public Relations rebuked the end of 2016 including the non-transparent financial management of the then unincorporated association, goes out "from a deliberate obfuscation" and provides several breaches of codes for communications professionals, public affairs consultants and lobbyists determined. They are obliged to "disclose their clients and their and their interests in each case".

No information has yet been given about the financing of the new newspaper publisher, Conservare Communications .

The online edition does not contain any advertising, so the editorial content, hosting and operation of the website must be financed by other means.

Litigation

Since the Deutschland-Kurier's logo and layout are too similar to those of its Berliner Kurier , the Berlin publisher , which belongs to the DuMont media group , announced legal action in the summer of 2017. The Cologne Regional Court dealt with the legal dispute, which rejected an injunction against the Deutschland-Kurier . The Cologne Higher Regional Court also rejected an interim injunction in September 2017 because it “did not consider the title to be a trademark infringement” and the newspaper titles themselves are sufficiently distinguishable.
