Guido Reil (2017)

Guido Thorsten Reil (born January 19, 1970 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German politician ( AfD ) and former miner . For his transition from the SPD to the AfD after 26 years of membership because of his criticism of the SPD policy during the refugee crisis , he received nationwide media attention. In 2019 he was elected to the European Parliament .

Life

Reil grew up in modest circumstances. When he was five years old, his father took early retirement and needed care at the age of 31 . Since graduating from secondary school at the age of 16, he worked in the mining industry, where he initially trained as a locksmith . Until its closure in 2018, he worked as a foreman in the Prosper-Haniel mine , where he was also active as a union and works council member . According to his own account, Reil is married to a Russian woman.

SPD member

Reil's father and grandfather were SPD members; he himself joined the party at the age of 20. There he was chairman of the Essen-Karnap local association from 2004 to 2014 . Since the local elections in 2009 he was councilor for Karnap in the Essen city council .

As district in Reil Essen-Karnap , who was then already a high proportion of migrants had, refugees housed should be, he organized as a member of the SPD beginning of 2016 a demonstration against it. However, the then North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft (SPD) intervened and got the event canceled. At the beginning of May 2016, Reil ran as deputy SPD chairman in Essen and combined his application with the demand for a change in course in refugee policy , which he said he also wanted to save the SPD. Shortly before, he had already expressed himself critically in an interview and had been quoted in the media nationwide as an SPD party rebel. After a violent controversy with the Essen SPD chairman Thomas Kutschaty , however, he only received 21.5 percent of the vote. On May 11, 2016, Reil left the SPD after 26 years of membership and joined the AfD in July 2016. He justified the move by saying that he could no longer bear how his party refused to accept reality.

AfD member

For the upcoming state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in May 2017, Guido Reil was placed 26th on the AfD state list and completed a number of campaign appearances in the Ruhr area . During the election campaign, strangers carried out attacks on Reil's house and his wife's car. Reil appeared on the talk shows Hart aber fair and Markus Lanz . As a direct candidate for constituency 65 Essen I-Mülheim II, he received 13.35 percent of the vote. The AfD received 13.11 percent of the second vote. In his place of residence Essen-Karnap, 20.3 percent and in the Vogelheim district 22.1 percent of the second votes went to the AfD, which was the second strongest party there before the CDU, in Altenessen and Bergeborbeck more than 15 percent each.

In the federal election in September 2017 , Reil ran in the Essen II constituency . He received 15.8 percent of the first and his party 15 percent of the second votes in the constituency. As expected, he did not receive a mandate from the Bundestag .

At the 7th federal party conference of the AfD in Hanover from December 2 to 3, 2017, Reil was elected as the third assessor with 55.53% of the delegate's votes in the party's federal executive committee. In his application speech, he described the “de-demonization” of the AfD as his task. The party is wrongly accused of anti-democratic activities, but it is based on the free basic order . His topics in the federal executive committee are work and social issues, the Ruhr area should become "the heart of the AfD".

The New York Times over said Reil later, there were plans to build a nationwide AFD-affiliated union, and announced a revolution, especially in the automotive industry at.

For the 2019 European elections , Reil was elected to second place in the AfD, behind Jörg Meuthen . His goal is to "save the Ruhr area ", which is not possible from Essen or Düsseldorf, but only in Berlin or Brussels, since the EU is constantly seizing new competencies.

Conflict with workers' welfare

After Reil's transition to the AfD, the Essen district association of the SPD-related workers' welfare organization (AWO) was expelled. Reil had been a member and one of the initiators of a senior bus service there for 25 years. In February 2017 the arbitration tribunal of the AWO district Niederrhein, in October 2017 the federal arbitration tribunal confirmed the initially limited suspension of his membership for one year. Among other things, Reil had expressed fundamental criticism about the ability of people from Arab cultures to integrate and the influx of Sinti and Roma in Gelsenkirchen , which was "racist" . With such statements he “consciously put himself in an irreconcilable contradiction to the basic values of the AWO”. The final exclusion can still be averted if he “self-critically renounces his views within a year”.

Reil himself saw only a description of reality in the statements accused of him. He stated that he would remain a member of the AWO and would continue to personally support the senior citizen bus project. He still feels connected to the basic values of the association, which is why he now wants to take the civil law path.

Legal dispute with employer

Coinciding with the beginning of his commitment to the AfD, a conflict began between Reil and his employer RAG (formerly Ruhrkohle AG), which continued to employ him as a Steiger , but no longer let him manage his old department. Instead, he was employed as a rope supervisor, although he said he had little to do and earned around 2000 euros less per month due to the absence of shift work. Reil saw it as a demotion because of his conversion and brought an action before the labor court in Herne . The RAG lawyer explained that “health restrictions” and the employer's duty of care were the reasons for the transfer.

Reil explained in court that in addition to financial losses and frustration because he had to do a frowned upon henchman activity that meant idling for hours, his new location was leading to more health problems than his old one. The judge doubted that the new assignment would also be “in accordance with the contract” and advised an amicable settlement, as otherwise an expensive procedure could be threatened. The representative of the RAG promised an examination.

Detention before May demonstration

When Reil wanted to take part in a demonstration in Essen on May 1, 2018, he and bodyguards who accompanied him were stopped by the police. Pepper spray was found on one of the security guards and is prohibited from being carried during demonstrations. The police therefore sent the entire group away . Reil resisted with words and was then taken into police custody. A law firm later raised serious allegations on behalf of Reil and announced a lawsuit before the administrative court to determine the unlawfulness of the measures. The exclusion of the security guard was justified, but not the exclusion of the whole group. The police action was disproportionate , and the judge should have decided whether to continue detention. The police objected that the interference was justified.

Donations from Switzerland

In July 2017 it became known that Reil had accepted money or services from donors in Switzerland during the election campaign. German politicians are prohibited from accepting donations from non-EU countries , with the exception of donations from German or European companies or individual donors of less than 1,000 euros. During his time as a candidate on the AfD state list for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017 and as a direct AfD candidate in Essen, he enlisted the help of the Swiss PR agency Goal . The Swiss had offered to support his election campaign with posters in his constituency in the north of Essen. The agency said the costs were covered, but not by whom. Reil granted Goal AG a “usage permit” and sent photos of himself to Switzerland.
