The German Athletics Association (DLV) initially set up 71 athletes for the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London , but Gregor Traber had to cancel the season due to an injury. Due to their achievements, Susen Küster and Christina Hering were nominated by the DLV , as well as Tatjana Pinto , who had already been nominated for the 4-by-100-meter relay , for the 100-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter run relay team established Ruth Sophia Spelmeyer for the 400 meters reported. Ultimately, there were 76 registered athletes (33 men and 43 women), of which 65 (28 men, 37 women) started.

Waiver and refusals

Aleixo-Platini Menga had to forego a start due to Achilles tendon complaints, so there was no German runner over the 200 meters at the start, after the German champion Julian Reus had previously decided against a start over half the stadium lap in favor of the 100 meters . Max Hess had to cancel his start shortly before the triple jump qualification because flexor problems became noticeable during the warm-up for the competition. Decathlete Mathias Brugger was unable to compete after the fourth of ten competitions due to knee problems. Although the fastest in Germany of the year, Lisa Mayer did without her individual start over 200 meters due to injuries and a lack of training in order to be completely “fit and fresh” for the 4 x 100 meter relay. Laura Müller could not compete over the 200 meters because she had a cold.

Norovirus outbreak

The World Championships were affected by a norovirus outbreak in many teams, as a result of which many athletes did not compete or could not call up their full performance and were not allowed to start because of the 48-hour quarantine rule. The German team issued isolation and quarantine, disinfectants were readily available everywhere in the hotel, food was served, the athletes and supervisors were given behavioral measures, and newly arriving athletes were accommodated in other hotels. The executive director of Sport Idriss Gonschinska and his staff were busy for days developing behavioral guidelines that had to be constantly adapted, finding a hotel for the newly arriving athletes and coaches, coordinating the changes to the transfers to the training and competition facilities, and so did the athletes Until the arrival of new therapists who are not actually planned, meanwhile largely forego physiotherapeutic measures. Which athletes fell ill was not disclosed due to the obligation of confidentiality .
