final

August 12, 2017, 7:35 p.m. local time (8:35 p.m. CEST )

The favorites were the Ethiopian world champion from 2015 and Olympic third from 2016 Almaz Ayana as well as the Kenyan Hellen Obiri, who came second in the 2016 Olympic Games . Ayana had already won the 10,000 meter race here in London . The vice world champion from 2015 Senbere Teferi from Ethiopia and the Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan, including third in the 2015 World Cup over 1500 meters, were also rated highly .

Nobody wanted to take the lead in the first lap, the runners formed a field spread out over several lanes, the pace was correspondingly moderate. Shortly before the start of the second round, the two Ethiopians Kalkidan Gezahegne and defending champion Ayana took the lead. They increased the pace more and more. It got really fast on the second kilometer. Ayana and Obiri moved away from the front, behind them a five-man chase group formed with Hassan, the two Ethiopians Teferi and Letesenbet Gidey and the two Kenyans Margaret Kipkemboi and Sheila Chepkirui. The second kilometer was covered in 2: 48.79 minutes - for comparison, kilometer one: 3: 18.62 minutes.

In the further course, the two leaders continued to increase their lead, while the pursuers were put back by the strongest runners in the rest of the field and a group of nine formed. Ayana continued to focus fully on the tempo card, but Obiri could not be shaken off. At the beginning of the last lap, the two were about fifty meters ahead of their pursuers. At the beginning of the back straight, Obiri launched her attack on Ayana and pulled past her. Ayana had nothing more to counter this attack. Hellen Obiri became world champion, Almaz Ayana won after gold over 10,000 meters now silver over half the distance. In the meantime, Sifan Hassan had broken away from the group of pursuers, who had become smaller, and came in third. Senbere Teferi took fourth place ahead of Margaret Kipkemboi. The Briton Laura Muir came in sixth after her fourth place over 1500 meters . Sheila Chepkirui from Kenya was seventh ahead of Susan Krumins from the Netherlands.
