final

August 13, 2017, 8:55 p.m. local time (9:55 p.m. CEST )

In the final there were the following line-up changes:

  • USA - Allyson Felix and Phyllis Francis replaced Kendall Ellis and Natasha Hastings.
  • UK - Eilidh Doyle ran in place of Perri Shakes-Drayton.
  • Poland - Aleksandra Gaworska and Justyna Święty replaced Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz and Martyna Dąbrowska.
  • Nigeria - Abike Funmilola Egbeniyi ran instead of Emerald Egwim.
  • Germany - Hannah Mergenthaler replaced Svea Köhrbrück.
  • Jamaica - Shericka Jackson and Novlene Williams-Mills ran in place of Anastasia Le-Roy and Stephenie Ann McPherson.

After the heats and also after the results of the 400-meter individual run, a duel between the United States and Jamaica emerged. Jamaica had won the title at the last world championships and was runner-up at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games , the USA were Olympic champions in 2012/2016, runner-up world champions in 2017 and world champions in 2013 . The first contenders for the possibly remaining bronze medal were the reigning European champions from Great Britain. The other squadrons qualified for the final were so close together in the heats that it was hardly possible to predict the outcome.

Even after the first change, the US season was almost impossible to catch up. Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby, who runs for Jamaica, was injured so badly on the second lap that she had to retire. So the main opponents of the USA were out of the running. Behind the superior leading season, the other teams were still close together. Eilidh Doyle, the third British runner, brought her team to second place and pulled away from her competitors by a few meters. Aleksandra Gaworska from Poland followed as third, who was able to set herself apart from the other teams still in the race. France, Germany and Nigeria moved pretty evenly in fourth to sixth, while Botswana had lost ground. The only exciting thing on the final lap was actually the fight for fourth place. The Olympic champion of the 400-meter individual competition Phyllis Francis ran a lonely race right at the front, the US team won the world championship by almost six seconds. Justyna Święty from Poland tried everything to get hold of Emily Diamond, but ultimately had no chance of reaching the British. Great Britain won the silver medal, the Polish women won bronze. The French final runner Elea Mariama Diarra brought her relay to fourth place ahead of Nigeria and Germany. Botswana finished seventh in the end.
