The women's 4 x 400 meter relay at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place in Helsinki , Finland , on August 13-14, 1983 .

Ten relays took part in the competition with 42 runners. The gold medal was won by the German Democratic Republic after 3: 19.73 minutes with Kerstin Walther , Sabine Busch , Marita Koch (final) and Dagmar Rübsam (final) as well as Undine Bremer and Ellen Fiedler, who were also used in the preliminary run .
Silver went to Czechoslovakia in 3: 20.32 minutes ( Taťána Kocembová , Milena Matějkovičová , Zuzana Moravčíková and Jarmila Kratochvílová ).
The Soviet Union secured the bronze medal with Jelena Korban , Marina Iwanowa , Irina Baskakowa and Marija Pinigina in 3: 21.16 minutes.

The GDR runners only used in the preliminary run also received a gold medal. The world championship record, on the other hand, was only available to the athletes of this team who actually started in the final.
