The heptathlon for women in the 1983 World Championships in Athletics took place on 8 and 9 August 1983 in Helsinki , Finland instead.
26 athletes from 19 countries took part in the competition. The athletes from the GDR were able to record a triple success. The gold medal was won by the reigning European champion Ramona Neubert with 6714 points according to the then current rating (today's rating: 6770 P). Silver went to the Vice European Champion from 1982 Sabine Paetz with 6662 points (today: 6713 P). Anke Vater secured the bronze medal with 6532 points (today: 6525 P).

execution
The heptathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1 (August 8th): 100 m hurdles , high jump , shot put , 200 m
- Day 2 (August 9th): long jump , javelin throw , 800 m
Evaluation was based on the points table from 1971. For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that, ranks thirteen and fourteen should have been swapped. However, these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. At the subsequent world championships, the current valuation was used.
