The men's 20 km at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 18, 1998 in the streets of the Hungarian capital Budapest .

European champion was the Russian Olympic runner-up in 1996, Ilya Markov . He won ahead of the Latvian Aigars Fadejevs . Bronze went to the Spaniard Francisco Javier Fernández .
