The men's javelin throw at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 21 and 23, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .

In this competition the British javelin throwers achieved a double success. His third EM -Titel won the defending champion, Olympic silver medalist from 1996 and two-time runner-up ( 1995 / 1997 ) Steve Backley . Mick Hill took second place . Bronze went to the German Raymond Hecht .

Record improvement

European champion Steve Backley improved the existing European Championship record in the final on August 23 by 2.42 m to 89.72 m. United KingdomUnited Kingdom 

qualification

August 21, 1998

25 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 82.00 m. Four athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the eight athletes placed next to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 79.63 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
