European record holder Janusz Sidło from Poland became European champion . He won in front of the Soviet thrower Vladimir Kuznetsov . Bronze went to Soini Nikkinen from Finland .

The 21 participants took part in a joint qualification round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was too low at 63.00 m. Sixteen throwers reached or exceeded this value and thus took part in the final. Only five athletes were eliminated.
