There was a Finnish double victory in this competition. European champion was defending champion Matti Järvinen . He won ahead of world record holder Yrjö Nikkanen . The Hungarian József Várszegi won bronze .

The eleven participants competed in a joint final. Each thrower was initially given three attempts. The best six athletes were then able to complete another three attempts. For the final result, the best litter of each participant came into the evaluation.
