The men's javelin at the 2002 European Athletics Championships was held on August 7th and 9th, 2002 in Munich's Olympic Stadium.
British Steve Backley won his fourth consecutive European title . In 1992 he won the Olympic bronze, in 1996 and 2000 Olympic silver. He was also vice world champion in 1995 and 1997 . Second place went to Sergei Makarov , who finished third in the 1996 Olympic Games . Bronze went to the German World Cup third in 1995 Boris Henry .

qualification
August 7, 2002
26 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 82.00 m. Six athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the six next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 79.04 m had to be achieved for the final.
