The men's discus throw at the 2002 European Athletics Championships was held on August 9th and 11th, 2002 in Munich's Olympic Stadium.

European champion was the Hungarian Róbert Fazekas . The second place went to the Olympic champion from 2000 , Vice World Champion in 2001 and European Championship -Third of 1998 Virgilijus Alekna from Lithuania. The German World Cup third in 2001 Michael Möllenbeck won the bronze medal.

Record improvement

European champion Róbert Fazekas improved the existing EM record in the final on August 11th by 1.75 m to 68.83 m. HungaryHungary 

qualification

August 9, 2002

28 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 63.00 m. Nine athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the three next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). In the end, 62.70 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
