Zoltán Kővágó (born April 10, 1979 in Szolnok ) is a Hungarian athlete who specializes in discus throwing.

Athletic career

Zoltán Kővágó gained his first international experience in 1996 when he finished fourth at the Junior World Championships in Sydney with a width of 53.72 m. The following year he won the bronze medal at the Junior European Championships in Ljubljana with 52.90 m and in 1998 he won the Junior World Championships in Annecy with a throw of 59.36 m. He also took part in the European Championships in Budapest for the first time, but was eliminated there with 56.89 m in qualification. In 1999 he finished sixth at the U23 European Championships in Gothenburg with 58.51 m and the following year he took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney for the first time, but in which he failed to make a valid attempt in qualifying .

In 2001 he won the U23 European Championships in Amsterdam with a width of 63.85 m and then started at the World Championships in Edmonton , where he did not reach the final with 58.42 m. The following year he reached the final at the European Championships in Munich , where he finished seventh with 63.63 m. In 2003 he retired at the World Championships in Paris with 61.31 m in qualification and the following year he managed to qualify again for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he took the silver medal behind the final with a throw of 67.04 m Lithuanian Virgilijus Alekna won. He then came second at the IAAF World Final in Monaco with 64.09 m, this time behind the Spaniard Mario Pestano .

At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 he reached tenth place with 62.94 m and was then third at the World Final in Monaco with 65.65 m behind the Lithuanian Alekna and Gerd Kanter from Estonia. The following year he failed to make a valid attempt at the World Final in Stuttgart and in 2007 he was ninth at the World Championships in Osaka with 63.04 m and seventh at the World Final with 61.58 m before he went to the Military World Games in Hyderabad with a width of 64.38 m the silver medal behind the Pole Piotr Małachowski . In 2008 he took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing for the third time , but failed there with 60.79 m in qualification and then reached fourth place at the World Final in Stuttgart with 65.11 m.

In 2009 he was sixth at the World Championships in Berlin with 65.17 m and he was eliminated from the qualification at the European Championships in Barcelona with 59.04 m. In 2011 he took part in the World Championships in Daegu and in 2012 he originally won the silver medal at the European Championships in Helsinki, but was convicted of doping shortly before the Olympic Games and his results were canceled. After his suspension he took part in the 2014 European Championships in Zurich , but missed the finals there with a width of 61.14 m. He was also eliminated from the qualification with 61.37 m at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing . He then won the Military World Games in Mungyeon, South Korea, with a throw of 66.01 m. In 2016 he finished sixth at the European Championships in Amsterdam with 64.66 m and also managed to qualify again for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he came seventh with 64.50 m in the final .

In 2017 he was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in London with 59.46 m , as well as at the European Championships in Berlin the following year with 59.29 m. In 2019 he finished sixth at the World Military Games in Wuhan with a throw of 56.47 m.

In 2001, 2004 and 2005 as well as from 2008 to 2011, from 2014 to 2017 and 2019, Kővágó was the Hungarian champion in discus throw.

doping

In July 2012, shortly before the Olympic Games in London , Kővágó was banned for two years until July 5, 2014 for a doping test refused in August 2011, according to a ruling by the International Court of Justice . His bronze medal, which he had just won at the European Championships , was revoked.
