qualification

August 20, 1958, 5:15 p.m.

The 21 participants took part in a joint qualification round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 48.00 m. Sixteen athletes exceeded this mark and were therefore qualified for the final (highlighted in light blue). Only five throwers were eliminated and, as with almost all jumping and throwing disciplines, it remains unclear why a qualification was even scheduled.
