The Stockholm Olympic Stadium was built between 1910 and 1912 for the 1912 Summer Olympics . The facility, built by the architect Torben Grut , holds around 14,500 spectators and has often been the setting for major sporting events. In front of around 25,000 spectators on June 10, 1956, 150 participants from 29 nations, including eleven women, moved into the Olympic Stadium at the opening ceremony of the equestrian games for the 1956 Summer Olympics . Because of the strict Australian quarantine regulations , the equestrian competitions could not take place in Melbourne and Stockholm was selected as a replacement location.

The stadium was the home of the Djurgårdens IF football team from 1936 to 2013 , and the IAAF Diamond League track and field event DN Galan takes place every summer . In June, the stadium is the destination of the Stockholm Marathon . The final of the Swedish bandy championship has been held here around 50 times . In 1959 a visitor record was set with 28,848 spectators. Music events are also held in the stadium, which is now a listed building . So occurred u. a. Coldplay , U2 , AC / DC , Michael Jackson , Bruce Springsteen , Robbie Williams , Rammstein and many others.
