Stockholm Marathon 2009, Västerbron

The Stockholm Marathon is the largest marathon in Scandinavia . It was first performed on August 4, 1979. At that time around 2,000 runners took part, five years later 11,000 runners, and today the number of participants is limited to 21,000. The marathon has been held in the twenty-second calendar week since 1982 and has been organized by the Stockholm athletics clubs Hässelby SK and Spårvägens FK since its inception .

The route was changed in 2010 to allow more runners to participate. The route begins in Östermalm , leads in the first 16.6 km long loop first to the southeast, then west to the old town , past the Royal Castle to Södermalm , over the Västerbron bridge to the island of Kungsholmen , passes the town hall and then leads back to Östermalm via Norrmalm . The second, approx. 25.6 km long loop runs first to the east, around the Kaknäst tower in Gärdet, then over the Djurgården peninsula and joins the course of the first loop shortly before the old town, with which it is then identical until it reaches the Destination turns - the Stockholm Olympic Stadium , the venue for the 1912 Summer Games . A large part of the run leads along waterways.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the run was initially postponed to September 5 and should take place together with the Stockholm Half Marathon, which in turn should have a different route with the goal in the Olympic Stadium. In mid-June, it was finally canceled completely, as it was foreseeable that the restriction of events to a maximum of 49 people would not be lifted until September.
