Rita Jeptoo Sitienei (born February 15, 1981 in Kapsabet ) is a former Kenyan long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon .

Career

Since 2000, the runner , who comes from the Nandi tribe , has competed in road races mainly in Italy . In 2000 she was third in Roma - Ostia and in 2001 fourth in the Udine Half Marathon. In 2003 she finished fourth in the Prague Half Marathon and set a course record in the South Tyrolean Spring Half Marathon .

In the following season she switched to the marathon route and won the Stockholm Marathon and the Milan Marathon . She also won the half marathon of the Nairobi Marathon .

In 2005 she was third in the Turin Marathon , seventh in the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki and second in the Delhi Half Marathon .

In 2006 she won the Boston Marathon after the Paris Half Marathon . At the road running world championships in Debrecen over 20 km she took bronze in 1:03:47 h behind Lornah Kiplagat and Constantina Tomescu , both of whom remained below the old world record times, and she came fourth in the New York City Marathon .

In 2007 she won the Lisbon half marathon after finishing fifth in the RAK half marathon . A fourth place in Boston, a third in the Great Manchester Run and a seventh in the marathon of the World Championships in Osaka was followed by victory in the Obudu Mountain Run . The following year she was third in Boston, won the Great Wales Run and the Portugal Half Marathon . and finished fourth in New York City.

In 2013 she finished third in the RAK half marathon in 1:06:27 h, not only personal best, but also the fifth fastest time of a woman over this distance. In the same year she won the Boston Marathon for the second time , for which it took 2:26:25 h. At the Chicago Marathon , she was able to improve her personal best of 2:22:04 h, set in the same place in 2012, by over two minutes to 2:19:57 h, marking the world's best time for the year. In 2014 she was fifth in the RAK half marathon in 1:08:49 h. Her first place in the 2014 Boston Marathon was stripped of her because of doping.

Doping ban 2014

At the end of September 2014, Jeptoo tested positive for the illegal use of Epo during a doping control . The then 33-year-old was banned by the Kenyan Association for two years until October 29, 2016. In the ARD documentary Doping Secret Matter: In the Shadow Realm of Athletics (2015) she reported on the inadequate anti-doping fight in Kenya.

In October 2016, the World Athletics Federation ( IAAF) obtained an extension of Jeptoo's suspension to four years until October 30, 2018 before the CAS International Court of Sports because of aggravating circumstances. Her victories at the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon 2014 were stripped of her.
