The 1st Road Running World Championships (officially: 1st IAAF World Road Running Championships Debrecen 2006 ) were held on October 8, 2006 in the Hungarian city of Debrecen . The women's race started at 11 a.m. and the men's race started at 1 p.m. Athletes from 43 countries took part in the competition.

The competition consisted of a road run of 20 km for women and men . The route was a circular course of 5 kilometers in length with start and finish at the main building of the University of Debrecen , with a difference of 3.25 m between the lowest and the highest point of the course.

In addition to individual scores, there were team scores that included all countries from which at least three runners had reached the finish. For the evaluation, the three best times of the athletes in each country were added up.

The outstanding achievement of the event was the 20 km world record in the women's competition, which the Dutchwoman Lornah Kiplagat set with 1:03:21 h. Second- placed Constantina Tomescu from Romania also stayed below the old record of 1:03:26 that the British Paula Radcliffe had set in the meantime at the 2001 World Half Marathon Championships in Bristol.
