1998 World Half Marathon Championships

The 7th Half Marathon World Championships (officially IAAF World Half Marathon Championships ) took place on September 27, 1998 in the Swiss city of Uster . It was held on the Greifensee run.

In the men's race, the eventual winner Paul Koech pulled away from a larger group of leaders after about half the distance and quickly built up a comfortable lead. At the end of the race he lost a few seconds to his pursuers, but still won easily. Behind them, Hendrick Ramaala sprinted to second place in a tight decision ahead of Khalid Skah at the same time . Ronaldo da Costa , who just a week earlier had set a new world record for the marathon distance at the Berlin Marathon , took a respectable twelfth place. The team standings (adding up the times of the three fastest runners in a country) won South Africa, which was the only country with three runners in the top ten, ahead of Kenya and Ethiopia.

In the women's race, which started twenty minutes later, a duel developed between the defending champion Tegla Loroupe and the world record holder at the time, Elana Meyer . In the last few kilometers, Loroupe was able to run out a small lead that brought her victory. She was the first athlete in the history of the World Half Marathon Championships to defend her title. With a clear gap, but still far ahead of the rest of the field, Lidia Șimon followed in third place. Kenya won the team championship ahead of Romania and Spain. A five-year winning streak ended for Romania.
