Addis Abebe ( Ethiop. አዲስ አበባ; born September 5, 1970 ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner .

He first attracted international attention when he won the title in the 10,000-meter run and the bronze medal in the 5000-meter run at the 1988 Junior World Championships in Athletics in Sudbury . The following year he won the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Stavanger and then began to establish himself in the adult sector. At the African Athletics Championships in Lagos , he won the 10,000 m and was second in the 5000 m. At the African Championships in 1990 in Cairo, he also won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meter run.

After Abebe had only achieved 13th place in the 10,000 meter run at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 1991 , he celebrated the most important medal win of his career a year later at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Over 10,000 m he was third behind Khalid Skah and Richard Chelimo . At the end of the season Abebe won the World Cup in Athletics in Havana.

In January 1993 Abebe made the headlines when he won a 10-kilometer road race in Jakarta and set a world record over this distance with 27:40 minutes. As a result, he earned $ 500,000 in prize money in one fell swoop, an exorbitant amount in running for the time. Abebe was financially secure and only appeared sporadically at road races in Europe. At the 1998 Half Marathon World Championships in Uster, he finished 29th in the individual standings and won the bronze medal in the team standings.
