The 14th Half Marathon World Championships (officially IAAF World Half Marathon Championships ) were held on October 1, 2005 in the Canadian city of Edmonton .

The start and finish were in William Hawrelak Park. It was a four and a half lap course to complete.

At 6 ° C and pouring rain, Fabiano Joseph sprinted over the Qatar-born Kenyan Mubarak Hassan Shami , who already believed himself to be the winner, at the finish line . The 19-year-old Tanzanian had won silver in the previous two years. In the women's race, Constantina Tomescu took the lead from the start, pulled away from the rest of the field at km 8 and ran a lead of over a minute to the finish. It was the first world title for the Romanian, who had won bronze in the marathon of the world championships in Helsinki three weeks earlier and in Beijing in 2008Olympic champion in the marathon. In the fight for the silver medal, Lornah Kiplagat from the Netherlands won against her former compatriot Susan Chepkemei from Kenya only on the finish line . The team standings (adding up the times of the three fastest runners of each nation) secured Ethiopia for the men, ahead of Eritrea, whose best runner Zersenay Tadese was injured, and Romania for the women.
