World Half Marathon Championships 2008
The 2008 Half Marathon World Championships (officially: IAAF / CAIXA World Half Marathon Championships ) were held on October 12, 2008 as a road race in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro . For the first time, the IAAF awarded this competition to South America, which was taking place for the 17th time .
The route was identical to the 12th Rio de Janeiro half marathon, which took place on the same day: a very flat point-to-point course with a difference in altitude of a good 20 meters, the one from São Conrado beach below the Pedra da Gávea mountain above Leblon , Ipanema , Copacabana and Botafogo to the finish in Flamengo .
While the women's race started at 8:45 am, the race of the men began half an hour later 200 meters from the 16,000 participants strong starting field of simultaneously launched people run . The temperature was 23 ° C, the humidity 78%.
Zersenay Tadese confidently defended his title from the 2007 road running world championships , took off before km 5 and became the first athlete to become world champion in the half marathon for the third time with a lead of almost two minutes. Also Lornah Kiplagat sat down early at km 7 on the front of the field and also safely won their third title.
