Lidia Șimon (born Slavuteanu ; born September 4, 1973 in Târgu Cărbuneşti , Gorj County ) is a Romanian long-distance runner who won the Olympic silver medal in the marathon in 2000 and was world champion in 2001.

She finished tenth in the marathon of the 1994 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki and later that year won the Lyon Marathon . In 1996 she took part in the Atlanta Olympics and finished sixth. At the World Half Marathon Championships she won silver in Palma de Mallorca in 1996 , bronze in Košice in 1997 and bronze in Uster in 1998 .

At the World Athletics Championships in Athens in 1997 and at the 1999 World Championships in Seville , she won the bronze medal in the marathon. In the 10,000 meter run at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest, she was third in her personal best of 31: 32.64 minutes. In 1998 and 1999 she won the Osaka Women's Marathon .

2000 was her most successful year to date. First she again won the Osaka Women's Marathon in her personal best of 2:22:54 h, then came second in the London Marathon and finally finished second in the marathon of the Olympic Games in Sydney behind Naoko Takahashi and in front of Joyce Chepchumba . At the end of the season she was third at the World Half Marathon Championships in Veracruz .

At the 2001 World Championships marathon in Edmonton , she won the title in a dramatic final ahead of Reiko Tosa (JPN) and Svetlana Sakharova (RUS). Earlier this year she was fourth in the London Marathon.

In 2004 Șimon took part in the Olympic Games in Athens , but did not reach the goal. She also came second in the Vienna City Marathon in 2004 and second in the Nagano Marathon in 2005 .

The 2007 season started for her with a sixth place in the Osaka Women's Marathon. Also in Osaka, she was fifth and best European in the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in 2007 . In the same year she won the Shanghai marathon .

In 2008, Șimon took part in the Beijing Olympics and came in eighth. She came in the same place in the New York City Marathon 2008 . At the 2009 World Athletics Championships she was 21. At the 2010 European Championships , she was tenth. In 2011 and 2012 she won the Osaka Marathon .

In 2012 Șimon took part in her fifth Olympic Games in London and came in 45th place.

Lidia Șimon is 1.57 m tall and weighs 44 kg. She is married and has a son. In 2000 she was awarded the Order of Loyalty to the rank of knight.
