Târgu Cărbuneşti is a small town in Gorj County in Romania .
location
Târgu Cărbuneşti is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , in the foothills of the Parâng Mountains in the historical region of Little Wallachia . On both sides of the Gilort , a left tributary of the Jiu , and the national road ( drum național ) DN 67B, Târgu Cărbuneşti is located about 20 km east of the district capital Târgu Jiu .
history
Archaeological finds have shown that the present-day urban area has been settled since the Neolithic and the Bronze Age . The village arose at the crossroads of several trade routes and was first mentioned in 1480 under the name Târgul Gilort . In 1504, the Wallachian prince Radu cel Mare named the market place in a document Petreşti . This name or Petreştii de Sus remained until the beginning of the 20th century. The development of the place was favored by the commissioning of the railway line from Filiași to Târgu Jiu in 1888. 1968 Târgu Cărbuneşti received the status of a city.
Important branches of the city are the timber and construction industries as well as the extraction of coal and oil.

At the 2002 census, the city had 8,699 people, including 8,185 Romanians and 511 Roma .

Târgu Cărbuneşti has had a railway connection since 1888. In the direction of Târgu Jiu and Filiași , there are currently (2009) around four express and five local trains each day. There are also bus connections to the district capital Târgu Jiu . In 1983 a 23 km long railway line to Seciuri was put into operation from the city , which only serves the transport of goods (mainly coal).
