Tismana is a small town in the Romanian Wallachia in the Gorj County .

The place in the Transylvanian Alps is particularly well-known for the Romanian Orthodox monastery Tismana. This is the oldest still existing monastery in Wallachia.

Prince Radu II (1377-1383) built the first monastery on site . It was intended to counter the spreading Catholicism on the border in nearby Hungary with a spiritual bulwark.

Thanks to generous donations, the monastery soon owned ten villages in the vicinity, another ten villages in what is now Serbia, ten gypsy settlements, the customs offices at Calafat, Balta Bistrețului and Vâlcan, the tenth of the copper ore mines in Bratilovo, as well as extensive agricultural areas.

After the monastery fell into disrepair in the following centuries, Prince Radu cel Mare ( Radu the Great , 1495–1508) had a new monastery built on site.

The place was created in the 15./16. Century around the monastery and is now an important Romanian center of the wood industry . From 1938 to 1997 there was a forest railway to transport wood . In addition to the monastery, the place is internationally known for the artisans' cooperative "Arta casnică", whose handicrafts are sold internationally.

In 2004 Tismana received city status.
