Țicleni is a small town in Gorj County in Romania .
Geographical location
Țicleni is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians on the edge of the Depresiunea Târgu Jiu valley in a left side valley of the here channeled river Jiu (German Schil ). The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 20 km to the northwest.
history
In the area of today's city, bones of a mammoth , various archaeological finds from the centuries before the turn of the century and the remains of a Geto - dac fortress were discovered.
The oldest written evidence of the existence of the place dates back to 1612, when a document issued in Târgovişte described the boundaries of the now incorporated town of Tunşi .
The town, which was dominated by rural areas for a long time, changed its character fundamentally in the 20th century, when oil and gas deposits were discovered and extracted on a large scale since the end of the Second World War . Țicleni became an industrial place. This brought an economic upswing, but also major environmental problems. At the beginning of oil production, all wastewater and residues were discharged into the Jiu and its tributaries without being cleaned.
In 1968 Țicleni received city status. In addition to the production of oil and natural gas, the most important branches of business are wood and food processing as well as agriculture (including fruit and wine growing).
population
In 1930 there were about 2600 residents in the area of today's city, including about 50 Roma ; the rest were Romanians . The 2002 census counted 5205 inhabitants in Țicleni, including 5185 Romanians and 17 Roma.
