history
Rovinari was originally a small, agricultural village. Since the end of the First World War , but increasingly since the 1950s, low-grade hard coal ( lignite ) has been mined partly in open-cast and partly underground mines in the area around Rovinari . The village took on a completely different character; some settlements had to give way to mining activities; numerous prefabricated buildings were built for this. The Jiu River has been relocated in parts. In 1981, Rovinari received city status.
The most important industries in the city are mining and power generation. The Rovinari power plant was built in the 1970s .
