The women's marathon at the 1999 World Athletics Championships was held on August 29, 1999 in the streets of the Spanish city of Seville .

The North Korean Jong Song-ok became world champion . She won ahead of the Japanese Ari Ichihashi . As at the World Championships two years earlier, bronze went to Romanian Lidia Șimon , who was third in the 1998 European Championship over 10,000 meters .

As with the previous World Championships , there was a team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup. The number of participants was correspondingly high. Five runners per nation were allowed, of which the times of the best three were added together for the evaluation. However, this competition was not part of the official medal table. The team from Japan won ahead of Romania and Germany .
